Kissing Vito

By now most of you have probably heard of or seen “the kiss” that Michael Sam planted on his boyfriend Vito Cammisano after Sam was finally picked in the last round of the NFL draft this past weekend.  To be sure, I’m a supporter of gay rights and as a libertarian believe that people should be free to do what they want in the privacy of their bedrooms, but for my part “the kiss” which was broadcast on national TV by ESPN was in very bad taste ( no pun intended since it was clear that this just wasn’t just an affectionate closed lips gesture).  Lots of attention was being focused on Michael Sam being the potentially first openly gay player in the NFL. Indeed I can think of lots of other things in the world worthy of attention over this potential “first”.  However, living in the age that we do when anything related to gayness is the rage the Sam thing was getting lots of media play.  I came away from this episode thinking that Michael Sam probably did more to hurt the gay cause that any bigot could have possibly done.  His crying about being selected in the draft and then his kissing of his boyfriend Vito just reinforced all the anti-gay stereotypes that are already abundant in the country. I think Michael Sam is a jerk and should be ashamed of himself.
